ATM Safety Tips

For your safety, security and protection, please follow these important tips when visiting an ATM.

  • Be sure to memorize your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Do not write the PIN anywhere on your ATM/debit card or leave it somewhere in your wallet. Remember, if your card is lost or stolen it cannot be used unless your PIN is provided.
  • Always keep your PIN a secret – always! Someone you trust today may not be trustworthy tomorrow. Be sure to never give your PIN to anyone, even if he or she is helping you with a transaction. Stand between the ATM and the people waiting to use the machine, and shield the keyboard so others can’t see you enter your PIN.
  • As you enter your PIN at the ATM, be sure to “shield” it from any potential onlookers. If someone in the area looks suspicious, cancel your transaction, retrieve your ATM/debit card and immediately leave. Be sure to immediately notify local law enforcement as well as your financial institution about any criminal activity.
  • Remember to take your receipt as well as ATM/debit card with you. Cards and receipts contain valuable account information that should be safeguarded.
  • Avoid displaying your cash and, instead, put it away in your purse or wallet before leaving the ATM. Wait to count your money until you are safely in your car or at home.
  • In a safe environment, be sure to review the transaction to ensure it was complete and is accurately reflected on the receipt. If so, always remember to shred your receipt since it contains account information.
  • When visiting an ATM after sunset, consider going with another person to a location in a well-lit area. If someone in the area looks suspicious, cancel your transaction, retrieve your ATM/debit card and immediately leave. It’s always best to utilize an ATM is a safe area. And remember, be sure to immediately notify local law enforcement as well as your financial institution about any criminal activity.
  • Be prepared before going to an ATM by knowing what transaction(s) you want to conduct.
  • Have your ATM/debit card ready to insert into the machine before arriving, so you don’t have to reach into your purse or wallet.
  • If anyone asks you to withdraw money for any reason, leave the area at once. Be sure to immediately notify local law enforcement as well as your financial institution about any criminal activity.
